The brilliance of The Power, an award-winning speculative-fiction work by Naomi Alderman only now being released in the U.S., is that it conceives of a way to flip this power dynamic entirely upside down. ![]() Women are afraid that men will kill them.” As the adage often attributed to Margaret Atwood goes, “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. They also have to imagine what it’s like to sense the imminent danger in those interactions-to be weaker than their aggressor in every way, and to have that weakness woven into the fabric of society itself. To understand what it’s like for a woman to be catcalled, or harassed, or propositioned, it isn’t enough for men to simply put themselves in that woman’s place. But it gets at the fundamental imbalance of power that characterizes relationships between men and women. One of the most succinct definitions of sexual harassment I’ve read over the past few weeks goes like this: For men, it’s anything they might say to a woman that would make them uncomfortable if it were said to them, but in prison. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sacks' splendid and sympathetic telling, deeply human. If inconceivably strange, these brilliant tales remain, in Dr. Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities whose limbs have become alien who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents. In his most extraordinary book, "one of the great clinical writers of the 20th century" ( The New York Times) recounts the case histories of patients lost in the bizarre, apparently inescapable world of neurological disorders. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1892, Muir co-founded the Sierra Club and became the organization’s first president. In the years that followed the publication of My First Summer in the Sierra, Muir went on to advocate for the protection and preservation of wild landscapes. ![]() ![]() He described in detail the area’s trees, shrubs, flowers, mountain meadows, glacial features, and animals. On a more modest scale, Muir observed the flora and fauna that surrounded him with the keen enthusiasm of a naturalist. He climbed Cathedral Peak and Mount Dana and trekked through Bloody Canyon to Mono Lake. On a grand scale, he trekked into remote areas for sometimes days at a time. Muir’s journal entries from that summer reveal his growing wonder and awe at the Yosemite landscape, as well as his endless curiosity for the natural world. Muir’s diary entries describing the land, flora, and fauna he encountered became the basis for the book My First Summer in the Sierra, first published in 1911. During that time, Muir took every opportunity to explore the Yosemite area extensively-hiking, camping, writing, and sketching. In the summer of 1869, Scottish-American naturalist and author John Muir spent the months of June through September in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California accompanying a group of shepherds while they led a flock of sheep to the high country to graze. ![]() ![]() ![]() The film succeeded with excellent pacing – all of the omissions from the written version, and the reveal of Tessa’s bucket list was much more poignant. And so are some or the situations in the novel. I can’t say I didn’t mind it though, cancer is quite confronting. The more risqué scenes cut or buffed over. The film suffered as many screen adaptations do – sanitised to fit into a ratings category. And you live the time you have left without abandon. You do feel bipolar and swing to extremes. Yes it’s sad, but it’s the most realistic reaction to getting sick with a terminal disease I’ve read so far. Both film and novel make no apologies for Tessa, our protagonist’s actions. At first I really didn’t want to read another sad and depressing book, considering The Fault in Our Stars sent me into a funk for nearly a week. As a writer, I appreciated the complexity of the structure of the book, the back and forth throughout time, and how well drawn the characters were. They'd had a life-long love affair, with their love intersecting and crossing, staying steady and true. I wanted them to be together always! The end was particularly heart-wrenching for me. I loved Henry and Clare and ached for them as they met throughout time, at different ages, in different places, with different problems. It is very, very rare for me to be that gripped by a book. I only got up to feed the children, and only when they whined. I could hardly get off my couch when I was reading that book.
